The book is an attempt to study the transition of the tea industry of North Bengal since independence. The work offers an account of how the ownership in tea gardens changed hands after 1947 from British to Indians. A major intervention of the work is to shed light on the social injustice and economic deprivation of labourers. The most important change that took place in tea industry after 1947 was the social transformation and political empowerment of the tea garden labourers. The new generation, after being acquired higher degrees, entered the government services. So now they emerged as the mouthpiece of the non – organised non – educated tribal people. The emergence of Akhil Bharatiya Adivasi Vikash Parishad (ABAVP) as a political force in terai - duars region marked a change in their political desires and aspirations. Today they are taking active part in all political activities from the grassroots to the national level.
