The emergence of Vaishnavism and its proliferation in medieval Assam encompassed the wholeregion, culturally regarded as a renaissance in the socio-religious life. A phenomenon unfolded around the principles of Vedantic and Bhagavata traditions, gradually crystallised into devotion,determination, and access to salvation through servitude and submission. Progressively, the movement initiated substantial changes in the value system and ushered in egalitarianism in thesocio-religious sphere, in a profound artistic manifestation. Congruently, Sattra institutions of Assam,established under the universalist ideology of Eka-Sarana-Nam-Dharma of Srimanta Sankaradeva,lowered the threshold to a straightforward, non-ritualistic, and more accessible form of Vaishnava devotion, and institutionalised various communicative visual practices. The spiritual reformation witnessed unprecedented implementation and coherence of visual paradigms as a key inspiration to the communication of its dogma. That eventually transformed the human community and fostered it towards the sophistication of learned and knowledgeable conduct, ideas, beliefs, and the customs they practice in an integrated social milieu.The present volume, entitled Visual Paradigms of Vaishnava Faith in Assam, is intended to foreground the development of aesthetic practices and their significant contribution to the proliferation of Neo-Vaishnavism as a mark of resurgence. In equal measure, this work delves into the practice of Manuscript illumination, Mask-making, and wood-carving, alongside the unwavering craftsmanship of the countless anonymous artisans, past and present, whose spiritual devotion has sustained diligent practices that catalyse a vital rejuvenation in the cultural and spiritual landscape.
