Social and Solidarity Economy (SSE) refers to economic activities and relationships that place social and environmental objectives above profit maximization. It involves collective action by citizens—producers, workers, and consumers—who collaborate in solidarity to democratize both the economy and society. The term serves as an umbrella concept encompassing the “social economy,” “solidarity economy,” and third-sector organizations and enterprises. At its core, SSE seeks to reassert social control over economic processes and to reconnect the economy with society and nature. While many Social and Solidarity Economy Organizations and Enterprises (SSEOEs) are created to address specific community needs, others pursue broader systemic transformation. They aim to reshape the dominant economic model toward one grounded in participatory democracy, solidarity, equity, human and environmental rights, self-determination, mutual support, and cooperation. SSEOEs emphasize ethical economic practices built upon democratic governance, self-management, reciprocity, solidarity, and active citizenship. Over recent decades, these organizations have grown significantly in both developed and developing countries. Rooted in grassroots initiatives, they have helped counter long-term challenges such as rising poverty and inequality, environmental degradation, and de-industrialization that has led to job losses among skilled workers.
